Revisional Bariatric Surgery

Revisional Bariatric Surgery by Alex Gandsas

Revisional Bariatric Surgery is offered to those patients to correct or modify a previous weight loss procedure. Studies have shown that between 5% to 8% of patients who underwent a bariatric procedure will fail, requiring a revisional operation.

The most common indication to revise a previous bariatric surgery is  “weight regain”.

However, an additional procedure might be needed if the patient suffers from setbacks from the previous original surgery such as Heartburn (GERD), vomiting or chronic abdominal pain.

Most insurance companies do cover Revisional Bariatric Surgery as this is considered a deviation of the intended goal.

Although revisional bariatric surgery does carry a higher risk for potential complications, it is a safe and effective choice when performed by an experienced bariatric surgeon.
