Sleeve Gastrectomy

Gastric Sleeve Alex Gandsas

A sleeve gastrectomy is a permanent weight loss surgery that has grown in popularity in recent years.

In this procedure approximately 80% of the stomach is removed. Your surgeon creates a thin, vertical stomach pouch that is roughly the size of a banana.

It is expected that patients will lose between 60& and 70% of their overweight in the first year post surgery.

Like other weight loss surgeries, sleeve gastrectomy reduces the amount of food that your stomach can hold. The surgery may also impact hormones in the gut that trigger hunger, fullness and blood sugar control.

After surgery, your body still digests food naturally. Food passes through the entire digestive track and is absorbed into the body.

This surgery cannot be reversed. Once a large portion of the stomach is removed, the procedure can't be undone.

What are the advantages of the Sleeve Gastrectomy?

  • The Gastric Sleeve is a faster, technically less complex operation when compared to the gastric bypass.

  • Unlike the gastric bypass, gastric Sleeve does NOT involve the division of the small bowel with re-communication to the stomach pouch.

  • This is safer operation, especially for patients suffering from severe health condition.

  • Gastric Sleeve removes part of the stomach that produces Ghrelin,  the hormones that stimulates hunger and meal initiation.

  • Does not involve the placement of a foreign body as seen with the Lap Band.

  • Weight loss is similar to Gastric Bypass after 6 years following surgery.
