Weight Regain after Weight-Loss Surgery
Bariatric Surgery is considered the most efficacious, sustainable and durable intervention to lose weight with improvement or resolution of comorbidities such as type II diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and sleep apnea .
However, 20 to 25% of patients will incur into weight regain or weight recidivism after Gastric Bypass or Sleeve Gastrectomy.
It is important to point out that most patients will experience some form of weight regain as a result of factors such as genetics, hormonal derangement, physical inactivity and aging.
However, patients who have failed to lose more than 50% of their over-weight after bariatric surgery might qualify for “revisional Bariatric Surgery”.
Studies have shown that weight regain following bariatric surgery is associated with the deterioration of their quality of life and recurrence of the comorbidities.
My practice focuses mainly in the anatomical aspect of weight regain by offering a surgical correction to restore or optimize the index operation (Sleeve or Bypass).
These procedures include:
SLEEVE:
-
Fundectomy
-
Stricturoplasty
-
Repair of paraesophageal hernia
-
Revision to Gastric Bypass
-
Revision to SADI
GASTRIC BYPASS:
-
Gastric Pouch reduction
-
Distalization of the Roux Limb for failed bypass
-
Resection of the gastro-gastric fistula
